Not just any marketing, this is M & S Marketing…..

Everyone loves M & S, we all aspire to do our weekly grocery shop there because the food is just amazing but how do we know the food is so amazing? Of course we’ve all had food from there and probably enjoyed it but mostly its to do with their marketing which is simply genius and is SO influential that their slogan ‘Not just any……, this is an M & S…..’ is so widely recognised that it is used for slogans. jokes. news headlines etc  - now THAT is effective marketing!

Actually the technique that M&S have recently been using in their marketing is a well-known marketing technique and you can use it yourself to generate more sales and for people to get the same sense of quality with you that they do when they think of M&S.

The technique is all about telling people HOW you do what you do, and when I tell my clients about this they automatically say ‘but what if people copy me’ – well the truth is let them! No one else is you and no one can produce what you produce as good as you so REALLY don’t worry about it! So WHY would you tell people how you do what you do? Think about the M&S adverts, take an apple pie as an example, they explain where they get the apples from, how long the bakers have trained for, how much care and attention goes into making the perfect pastry and even go into detail about the decoration that goes on it, just to make it pretty, and then they end by saying, you could do all that OR you could buy one from them – so what do you do? You don’t make it yourself, you buy it from them because you have been told what care and attention goes into the whole process and as if by magic that justifies them charging you loads more than the apple pie you could get from your local Aldi! The funny thing is, the process of making the apple pie is probably exactly the same as goes into the Alsi apple pie, the difference is Aldi haven’t told you about it!
Another company that is great at explaining what they do is Pret a Mange – on all their sandwich packets they tell you how they’ve made it! You COULD make it yourself with their instructions, but no, people rather pay an extortionate amount for them to do it. Innocent also use this technique to great effect and yes, Innocent are another company that on the face of it chargea huge amount for something very simple!

You to can tell people HOW you make what you do – if you are a cake maker, don’t obviously tell them about your exact recipe but tell them how much training you’ve done, how you select the good ingredients, how you have chosen the particular good quality cake tins you use, why you use a certain icing etc….

This kind of marketing REALLY does work a treat and is definitely worth doing, if you need some help  formulating your own ‘How to’ story get in touch…..

What Can You Learn From The Genius Steve Jobs ?

My first introduction to Apple was about 10 years ago, I was dating an IT expert and it used to drive me nuts the way he always told me what I SHOULD be doing on my laptop and was always using it and ‘upgrading’ it.  One afternoon my car was broken into, my laptop (amongst other things) was stolen and I needed a new one. Of course, the IT expert knew exactly what I should buy and what spec I needed etc which again I found annoying and so I bought something he knew absolutely NOTHING about…. I bought a Macbook and I’ve LOVED  Macs ever since.

As soon as I received my Mac my love affair started, it was delivered exactly when I was told it would be, it came beautifully packaged and when I took it out of the box I didn’t have to faff about installing anything, I literally plugged it in and started using it. Not only that but it was SO easy to use, I didn’t need to KNOW anything because it seemed impossible to break or corrupt and whatever seemed the obvious way to work it worked! Not only have I used a Mac ever since and literally could not be paid enough money to go back to PC’s but I’ve had several Ipods, and when the Iphone was launched, even though previously I had always been a die-hard Motorola fan I immediately ditched them to buy one !

So what has my rather unhealthy obsession with everything Apple got to do with your business?  Well, when developing soething new Steve Jobs concentrated on Yes, the technology, yes, the design, but most of all he focused on the user. When he developed his first Macintosh many years ago he sat in front of it and said, whats that noise? Its the fan they said, all computers then were cooled by hard working fans and the Macintosh was the first one that was cooled differently so as to eradicate the noise – it annoyed him therefore it would annoy the users.  He thought about his customers at every stage and developed products that made their life easier……

We can all learn from Steve Jobs, how easy do we make life for our customers? I’ve been on a few websites just recently that were actually hardwork to find any contact details, I searched for ages to locate them but a potential customer wouldn’t, they would give up and go elsewhere. Do you follow up when contacted or do you expect your customers to do all the running? When working with them do you keep them informed of progress or expect them to chase you?  Its easy to go that extra mile and put your customer first and make their life easy but so few businesses actually do it. Do you deliver on time, everytime, does the package look nice when you DO deliver?

You too could have raving fans like I am with Apple, I tell anyone that will listen how much I love them and I’ve converted some! Raving fans are the least expensive sales force you can ever have and they are also the most loyal and devoted – So what exactly are you doing to build yours?

If you need help getting your business to where you want it to be, join my Wedding Wealth Program Now !

You need to know what your brides REALLY want to buy…

When I’m talking to new clients I always like to start by asking the question above, what are your brides buying? Of course I get the usual answers of Wedding Planning, Invitations, a Wedding Video, Photography but are any of those answers correct? Well actually they are not, and that’s where lots of Wedding Suppliers marketing starts going wrong….

Everyone knows Dyson cleaners right? They are definitely one of the giant success stories of recent years, these strange looking, heavily price tagged hoovers have completely blown their competition away and one of the ways they’ve done this is because they identified EXACTLY what they target market wanted and delivered it in every bit of marketing they did with their fantastic slogan “The only vacuum cleaner in the world to maintain 100% suction, 100% of the time”  The slogan is genius and addresses exactly what their customers want but what are people actually buying when they buy a hoover? They don’t actually want to buy a hoover, nobody does, what people actually want is a clean home……. Lets face it, if someone tomorrow invented a system where all you had to do was press a button and all the dust and dirt immediately vanished from your house we’d all get it the minute we woke up wouldn’t we, and I’m pretty sure that most of us wouldn’t even care what it cost, hoovers would never come out of the cupboards ever again. So when we are shopping for a new hoover, we are NOT buying a hoover, we are buying the promise of a new home, just as when we buy a car we are NOT buying a car but a safe, reliable, comfortable way to get from A to B, the reasons for buying particularly cars may vary such as economy, status symbol etc but once again, if someone made teleporting a possibility tomorrow we’d not touch the car again!

So – what are your brides REALLY buying? A wedding is supposed to be the best, happiest day of your life so a bride buys things that she think will make that happen, everything she is buying is to enhance and make real that perfect wedding day that she has in mind.

When I started my wedding planning company I was constantly hearing from brides that they didn’t need a planner because they were doing it themselves and wanted to save the money, this was because I was trying to sell Wedding Planning, of course I was, I was a wedding planner after all right?? Wrong – I quickly reviewed my sales method and took on board the fact that I WASN’T selling wedding planning – what I was actually selling was an outcome! I was selling complete peace of mind for the wedding day, I was selling a wedding day that was going to go perfectly and all the bride and groom had to do was turn up, relax and enjoy the day, worry about nothing and know it was all taken care of, I was selling the happiness of all the guests, the knowledge for the bride and groom that all their guests would be catered for and looked after impeccably, my bride and groom wanted unique and special touches on the wedding day that none of their guests had ever seen before…… now THAT’S what my clients wanted, all of those things, NOT a wedding planner……..

So – have a think about what you are selling, whether you currently think its invitations, favours, flowers, photography, videography or planning, sit down and get clear about what you are REALLY selling and you will see your sales soar……

Dating – Ever Wondered What To Wear?

Its hard deciding what to wear for a date, especially a first date – of course you want to look fabulous but you don’t want to look too sexy for fear of giving the wrong impression!  When I started dating again I used to spend literally hours trying on everything I owned before a date which inevitably meant that I turned up late and it also meant that I always felt less than confident because I’d ended up wearing something out of desperation rather than out of choice!

After repeating this process on many occasions I realised there must be a better way – and there is! One rainy weekend I went through my wardrobe and found half a dozen outfits that I LOVE and that I feel fabulous and confident in-these are my official dating outfits!   My first date outfit is my favourite jeans, pretty lime green blouse and choice of 2 cardigans which vary depending on the weather. I feel great in this outfit, its ideal for a first date because it says I’ve made an effort but not too over the top or dressy and most importantly it currently has about a 95% success rate getting repeat dates, so when I put it on I feel confident and amazing! Not only that but before a first date, which is always slightly never-wracking I dont have to think about what to wear – it takes me no time at all to get ready and its one less thing to think about.  My second date outfit is jeans and a nice lacy top, third date is a nice dress and the outfits show slightly more cleavage as time goes on…… lol

The other advantage of course to my fabulous system is that if you are a prolific dater and you have lots of dates then you dont have to spend time wondering which outfit you wore on which date with which guy -GENIUS!!!!

But the point to my system is this -

  • It saves me time
  • It saves me stress
  • I always feel confident and fabulous

So now you know my dating system, this is Emma’s tip on what to wear:-

There’s enough potential for anxiety when it comes to meeting a new chap for the first time, without adding ‘wardrobe crisis’ to the list.  Admit it, you’re probably asking yourself, “Will he show up?  What if he’s a dork?  What’s the chances of my clumsiness spoiling my desperate attempts to look sophisticated?”

The answer is here - our top four tips that will ensure that you look, and feel your best on the date.  Even if he does turn out to be a dork, you never know who else you might bump into…

Be comfortable.  We don’t mean that you should show up in your velour tracksuit, but DO choose something that you already have and love to wear.  Everyone has something tried and tested in their wardrobe which always attracts compliments, and won’t have you fidgeting all through dinner.
Don’t try too hard. We’ve all been brought up to know that special occasions demand an effort, but don’t overdo it.  Classic first date faux pas include too much boobage, make-up, or alcohol.  Or a deadly combination of them all.  Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Remember the whole package. It’s no good having the perfect outfit if your hair is off the set of ‘Living Dead’ or you didn’t have time for make-up.  Enlist the help of a friend if necessary so that you’re groomed top-to-toe.
The most important accessory is a smile. If at the end of the evening you’ve shown what a friendly, positive, confident girl you are, he’ll be begging for more.
